Simple and Functional! June 12, 2009 Michael Bigger (Cold Spring Harbor, NY United States) 50 out of 54 found this review helpful
Kindle DX is a heavier unit. Adding a cover to the DX will only increase its weight. I doubt very much you can get away using the DX without a cover. I wouldn't since you must protect the DX's screen.
Can you make a cover that weighs less than this one? I mean, the cover is pretty simple. Amazon could remove the magnets securing the unit but I like these magnets. May be there is a way to strip it down to a lighter weight. I don't know of one. I think the improvement in weight must be come from a lighter DX and not so much so the cover. On the other hand, I am pretty positive an innovative Kindle user will recommend something that improves the experience. I will be paying attention to the Forum.
The front section folds back behind the unit which allows easy access to the Next/Prev/Home Page buttons with the right thumb. In that position, the cover stays put with the help of the magnets. This is very important, especially when reading a PDF document in landscape mode.
The cover's padding protects the screen and unit well. The magnets keep the unit shut when the cover is closed. That is a plus over the K2 cover in my opinion. The snap-in mechanism secures the unit appropriately. I haven't had any issue with the hinges.
I prefer holding the device within its cover. I feel more comfortable that way. I am very satisfied with this cover. That being said, I understand the frustration some might have with the overall weight of the package.
Update 7/7/2009: I have had this cover for almost a month now. Some people have reported that their DX unit got damaged by the hinges. I have opened the cover from the back a few times. You can open the back side of the cover by about 3 inches and then there is quite some strong resistance. It has been pretty obvious to me to stop pulling further and refocus on the front section of the cover which has the Amazonkindle tag. So far, none of this has been an issue to me because I handle my DX with reasonable strength. All in all, better than the K2 cover, which I rated 5 stars, because this cover has these magnets that keeps the cover shut. I just can't make a case to rate it lower.
Update 10/5/2009: My kindle DX is going strong in its cover. No cracks, no damage.
Update 10/31/2009: I posted a picture of my cover in the image section of this page. As you can see, all is good with my cover. Still going strong.
Update 12/5/2009: Someone pointed in the comment section of my review that the issue is with the upper hinge. I posted another picture of both hinges. Stll going strong.
Don't believe everything you read June 20, 2009 Gary Stratton (Lawndale, CA USA) 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
I read the reviews and almost passed this item by. I didn't see a better one so I went ahead and purchased. I was very pleasantly surprised. Is this a very fine leather case? No. Is it an excellent, attractive, practical holder for the Kindle DX? ABSOLUTELY. Until something better comes along this is the one. The magnetic clasps are terrific. The attachment to the Kindle is easy and strong. The cover folds all the way back so that the footprint is no bigger than the Kindle when reading. I would not hesitate to buy one again.
Wraps the DX in fine leather. June 11, 2009 Gordon Ewasiuk (Washington, DC) 29 out of 34 found this review helpful
This cover is a must if you buy a DX. The DX just snaps right into it -- a perfect fit. The cover looks great when you carry it places too. It almost appears to be a slim paper organizer. The classy faceplate, "AmazonKindle", gives away the secret though.
Inside, you will find a soft felt material which wraps around the DX. I think the felt actually cleans the screen when the cover is closed. There is a rail with a hook and another piece along the binding that snap into the DX. Once the DX is in, it isn't falling out without a whole lot of force. It is very snug and very secure.
The DX cover has two small magnetic strips that help keep it closed when you're on the move.
This cover is expensive...but for the protection and security it provides, the style it highlights, and those magnetic strips that help keep the cover closed, it is worth the money. Get one. Your DX will thank you.
Great Cover! June 29, 2009 M. Hummel (Tampa, FL) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was hesitant to buy the cover for my Kindle DX when I read the amount of poor reviews. I am not sure why anyone would rate this cover only one star. So I ordered the cover (with intentions of returning it if it didn't work), but now that I have seen it for myself in person I love it! The Kindle DX clips into the covers hinge and the magnetic cover keeps the Kindle DX from slipping while I read it. I like to fold over the front flap cover so I can read with one hand when I'm sitting or lying in bed... a great feature that I never could do with a real book or I would bend up the cover and ruin the books spine. The cover is lightweight so it doesn't add a lot of bulk to the Kindle DX and you can tell the cover is really durable and you'll never have to worry about the screen getting scratched or damaged.
My advice is ignore the 1 star comments and see the cover for yourself. Yes, it's a shame that it cost $50, but there really aren't any cheaper alternatives. I would love a designer Cole Haan cover once they come out, but I bet they will be triple the cost and this cover is working out just great!
Must have for Kindle DX July 6, 2009 Aric Krause (Salt Lake City, UT United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
When it comes to protecting the Kindle DX, the cover is perfectly engineered. It is strong, yet relatively light. It is in no way intrusive when you are using the DX. The mechanism that holds the DX in place is clever, and a simple touch of the top holder removes the Kindle DX when you want to remove it. It is elegant in appearance, simple and clean, with no burdensome inclusions.
